Why I am not an expert on mangoes: A poem

Today’s prompt was to write a poem on why I am something but when I sat down to write, I ended up writing ‘why I am not an expert on mangoes’. So I am embracing the creative gift I got today and posting this. I will write the ‘why I am something’ poem some other day.

Why I am not an expert on mangoes

I am not an expert on mangoes

Because then I would have to evaluate

The sweetness/tartness/sourness/smoothness/fibrousness

Of the mangoes I eat,

So that I could write a 600 page report

On why this year’s Badamis are perfect for post dinner baking.

/

The truth is that I like to eat my mangoes

Like a nine year old child.

I need the juices to drip down my chin

And I need to suck the peel till I can almost taste the skin.

I need to lose myself in the burst of golden flavors on my tongue

And I need to be the ‘mindfully present’ perfection.

/

Alphonso. Banganpalli. Chausa.

I eat it all.

I can even tell you that Mallika has notes of citrus, honey and melon.

But I will not become an expert on mangoes

Because I want to eat my fruits with careless abandon

(Because I love them too much to make them my profession).

GloPoWriMo Prompt Day 3: The American poet Frank O’Hara was an art critic and friend to numerous painters and poets In New York City in the 1950s and 60s. His poems feature a breezy, funny, conversational style. His poem “Why I Am Not a Painter” is pretty characteristic, with actual dialogue and a playfully offhand tone. Following O’Hara, today we challenge you to write a poem that obliquely explains why you are a poet and not some other kind of artist – or, if you think of yourself as more of a musician or painter (or school bus driver or scuba diver or expert on medieval Maltese banking) – explain why you are that and not something else!

About the poet: Armaan Rai is a poet who writes about nature, moments and memories, and nostalgia. She uses simple words and phrases to capture the beauty and complexity of the world around her. She believes that poetry is a powerful tool for expressing emotions and connecting with others. This blog, Oregano Oranges, was started as a way of connecting with other poets and readers. She wanted to create a space where she could share her work, learn from others, and get an opportunity to touch someone’s heart.
