A novice poet's magical journey with words

When do you write your best poetry? A poem about writing

This poem about writing is one of the poems in which I want to explore what produces a poet’s best work. What emotions, situations, environments work well for writing poetry? Enjoy!

When do you write your best poetry? A poem about writing

I was leaning against the table with an Austen in my hand,

When my mother’s voice cut Darcy’s monologue in half

And while trying to get the stain out of the cheap china, she asked

‘When do you write your best poetry?’

‘In the morning? I think,’ I replied

Hoping the conversation would die.

However, she laughed,

‘That’s not what I meant, my dear.

What emotions and feelings lead to your best work?

Is it joy or melancholy, laughter or tears?’

A pause. Silence. Millions of thoughts.

‘I don’t know,’ I said and left

To ponder while fingering the pages

Of the tattooed Pride and Prejudice.

About the poet:

Armaan Rai is a poet who writes about nature, moments and memories, and nostalgia. She uses simple words and phrases to capture the beauty and complexity of the world around her. She believes that poetry is a powerful tool for expressing emotions and connecting with others.

She started this blog, Oregano Oranges, as a way of connecting with other poets and readers. She wanted to create a space where she could share her work, learn from others, and get an opportunity to touch someone’s heart.
