Waltzing in a yellow dress: A sapphic poem

Today

She poured oil on her fire

And together they left

On a cherry red convertible

From the town of nobodies

And busybodies of lore.

/

Two weeks ago

She was making a heart on a cafe latte

And trying to pour some kindness

In this dead town of frowns and disapproval

When she waltzed in through the front door.

Yellow dress, sunflower bracelet and

The prettiest fuchsia pink lips she had ever seen.

‘Why would you come here?’ she wanted to scream.

‘What would you like to have?’ she asked

As the tall woman stood in front of

The display case of shriveled bakes and cakes.

‘A cup of cafe latte with the prettiest thing you make,

Though that might be your smile, if I may say.’

She couldn’t help but break

Into a grin as wide as the sun at that

And that’s how it all began

And turned into the most

Whirlwind romance south of France.
