To Be Happy: A poem (NaPoWriMo 5)

So I finally decided to start posting for NaPoWriMo. I know I am a little late but I am happy to finally join the challenge. Let’s begin the challenge with a poem ‘To Be Happy’ which I wrote for today’s prompt.

To be happy

Said the child

Is to have sunshine

Filled carefree days

Of candies and play

And hugs and games.

/

To be happy

Said the 20-year old

Is to have a regular

9 to 5 along with no debt,

A faithful lover

And weekends for themselves.

/

To be happy

Said the almost retired

Is to have a house

They own along with health insurance,

A healthy partner

And savings for old age home.

Prompt 5 for NaPoWriMo “Today we’d like you to start by taking a look at Alicia Ostriker’s poem, “The Blessing of the Old Woman, the Tulip, and the Dog.” Now try your hand at writing your own poem about how a pair or trio very different things would perceive of a blessing or, alternatively, how these very different things would think of something else (luck, grief, happiness, etc).”
