Spark at a sports bar
We met at a sports bar under strange circumstances.
I was supposed to wait for my best friend’s date
And take him to his birthday surprise.
She was there with a boy
Trying hard to pretend to be coy.
We were both tired of waiting
But needed someone’s permission
Because societal conditioning of external validation.
Permission is what we received
From our warm brown and ocean blue eyes
Colliding under loud cheers and dim yellow lights.
She returned to her poker face and said bye.
I texted that I couldn’t wait anymore for a guy.
She glided on the bar stool next to mine
And whispered a sweet Thank you
While sliding her hand and gently touching my little finger.
I smiled and said something cheesy
She laughed without a hint of being shy.
We talked and talked and talked
And got kicked out after midnight.
One cab or two was not a question
We both had arrived at the same decision.
Over mugs of hot coffee
Our conversations continued
While we moved from kitchen to bedroom
To couch to balcony
And saw the best sunrise of our lives.
