A novice poet's magical journey with words

Old celluloid, new grief: A poem

This is a poem about memories, the value of photographs and grief.

Old celluloid, new grief

/

While getting the attic of my nani’s house sale ready,

I found a rusty old can filled with celluloids.

Through teary eyes, I somehow managed to see

My car keys abandoned on the tattered brown sofa seat.

Next stop was an old friend who knew how to convert

Forgotten memories into crisp new photographs I could treasure.

/

As soon as the photos hit my hands,

I started ploughing through them with frantic unsettledness,

As if that little pigtailed girl in black and white

Will somehow turn out to be alive at the bottom of that pile.

NaPoWriMo Prompt Day 1: As with pretty much any discipline, music and art have their own vocabulary. Today, we challenge you to take inspiration from this glossary of musical terms, or this glossary of art terminology, and write a poem that uses a new-to-you word. For (imaginary) extra credit, work in a phrase from, or a reference to, the Florentine Codex.

About the poet: Armaan Rai is a poet who writes about nature, moments and memories, and nostalgia. She uses simple words and phrases to capture the beauty and complexity of the world around her. She believes that poetry is a powerful tool for expressing emotions and connecting with others. This blog, Oregano Oranges, was started as a way of connecting with other poets and readers. She wanted to create a space where she could share her work, learn from others, and get an opportunity to touch someone’s heart.
