A novice poet's magical journey with words

My First Day in a New School: A friendship poem

How did you meet your best friend? Was it in school like the narrator of this poem did? Or was it much later in life? This friendship poem is about friendship (obviously). But it’s also about the feelings related to first day in a new school. Hope you enjoy it!

My first day in a new school

It was my first day in a new school

And I was a socially anxious kid

Terrified out of her wits.

I entered the classroom

And couldn’t hear the usual shouts

For my heart was pounding in my ear

Loud enough to drown the crumbling of the Everest.

Without meeting anyone’s eyes I went

Straight to the desk at the very end.

Breathe. Breathe. Breathe.

I was telling myself

When a Henna painted hand extended

Itself in an invitation that I couldn’t fully understand.

I looked up and saw a girl

Smiling at me as if I was her favorite flower.

‘Hi, I am Maya,’ she said in her angelic voice

And that was the beginning

of a brand new friendship story

For the rest of our lives.
